The Love of an Uncle

The love of an uncle

Just to be there

In the middle

Of confusion he listens

And cares .

We Sparkle

We sparkle , we stand

In the light , in the sand

We are strong against the dark.

We are women who make our mark.

We sparkle and we stand .

In the light , in the sand .

Kitchen is for Dancing

We were young

Music was in our feet.

My older sister and I

left with the chores

of the evening after dinner

to clean the kitchen.

We would wash the dishes

And as we did, we danced.

Rock and roll

And beach music,

the shag was the rage,

linoleum floor.

Our grandparent’s home

and white wash cupboards.

a small kitchen table

With a swinging door to the dining room.

A door we kept closed

So we could dance to the radio

Sitting on the yellow table

Loud enough to get by …

not loud enough to get caught

Elvis, the Beatles and Buddy Holly

Transformed into our bandstand

As we found ourselves dancing

In grandma’s kitchen …

Tanka

I remember the light

In my grandmother’s kitchen

Something you notice,

then later you remember

how refreshing her presence.

Weekend Speckled white and ash

Contrast green and soldiers seen

In uniform past.

The Steps

We are not sure

We wait with uncertainty

We listen to sounds unheard

As the world still does not know

What challenges we face …

It’s a Wonderful Life ( excerpt with Jon Matteson, my son)

Tom Sawyer

Tom Sawyer would be proud

Of the curiosity he shows

His wonder and discovery

A small rock he throws

Standing an looking

He thinks once more,

To collect another rock and

throws off to distant shore.

Dedicated to my Grandson

Autumn Ritual

The fire is lit

The fall has come

The days grow short

At the setting sun

The witches howl

The children play

Sweaters are worn

For the chilly days

Time will rearrange

As seasons show off

The colors change

A Sunday

My daughter and my 3 grandchildren and me at a local farm.

Grandchildren are the crowning glory of the aged; parents are the pride of their children.
